The Takahashi Naoko Cup: Gifu Half Marathon, held every April, is one of Japan’s signature spring running events, attracting around 10,000 runners to the heart of Gifu.

With Naoko Takahashi, the Sydney 2000 Olympic marathon champion and a proud Gifu native, serving as the event’s Chairperson the race carries special prestige: it is the only half marathon in Japan certified with the World Athletics Gold Label. Every year, top athletes from around the world gather at the start line, making the event a high-level international elite race.

Gifu City, the host of the race, is a beautiful blend of nature and urban life with the clear-flowing Nagara River running through its centre. Once a thriving castle town, Gifu still retains its traditional charm – historic streets, cultural heritage and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

One of the highlights of the event is its exceptionally scenic course. The opening kilometres take runners through the wide streets of downtown Gifu, surrounded by lively cheers and urban energy. As the race progresses the route shifts dramatically, guiding runners along the refreshing riverside of the Nagara River. It is a unique opportunity to enjoy both the bustle of the city and the peaceful serenity of nature within a single race.

Adding to the excitement are the appearances of Japan’s legendary marathon champions. In addition to Naoko Takahashi, Mizuki Noguchi, the Athens 2004 Olympic marathon gold medalist, is also scheduled to join the festivities. Both icons cheer on participants along the course and near the finish, offering high-fives and heartfelt encouragement that make the experience truly unforgettable.

During race weekend runners and supporters can enjoy the lively Marathon Expo and “Rakuichi Rakuza” marketplace. Local specialties, sweets, and regional delicacies fill the venue, perfect for building pre-race excitement or treating yourself to a well-deserved post-run reward with families and friends.

After finishing the race participants can relax and recover in the Nagaragawa Onsen, the area’s well-known hot spring resort, take the ropeway up Mt. Kinka for panoramic views, or stroll through the historic streets of Kawaramachi.

The Gifu Half Marathon is a celebration where history, nature, culture, community spirit and charity come together in a shared passion for running. Join us in Gifu this spring on 26 April 2026, and experience a festival of running that will stay with you long after your race is over.
