Every December the streets of Taipei transform into one giant running festival as tens of thousands of runners gather for one of Asia’s most celebrated city marathons – the Taipei Marathon.

First launched in 1986 the race has grown into Taiwan’s premier road running event and one of the most recognised marathons in Asia. Organized by the Taipei City Government and Chinese Taipei Road Running Association, the Taipei Marathon welcomes elite athletes, passionate amateurs, and international runners from around the world to experience Taiwan’s vibrant capital city on foot. Supported by major sponsors Fubon Financial Holding Co. and adidas, the event continues to strengthen its international presence while promoting running culture throughout Taiwan.

The race is known for combining modern urban scenery, local culture, and enthusiastic crowd support into one unforgettable marathon experience. The course passes some of Taipei’s most iconic landmarks, including Taipei City Hall, the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, and the streets surrounding Taipei 101 – one of the world’s tallest skyscrapers. Along the route runners are energised by live performances, cheering spectators and community support that give the race its warm and uniquely Taiwanese atmosphere.

Thanks to cool December weather and a relatively flat course many runners come to chase personal bests. The event currently holds the prestigious World Athletics Gold Label Road Race status, highlighting its world-class organization and growing international reputation.

On the day before the marathon, runners can join the popular Breakfast Run, featuring relaxed 3 km and 9 km events that bring together local runners and overseas visitors in a fun and social atmosphere. It has become a favorite tradition for participants wanting to experience Taipei in a more casual way before the main event.

The 2026 race theme, “Small Steps, Big Changes,” perfectly captures the spirit of the marathon. Every “small step” represents each stride runners take on the course – and through those steps come meaningful personal changes. Completing a marathon is not only a physical challenge, but also a transformation of determination, confidence and self-belief.

For many international runners, Taipei Marathon is also the perfect gateway to explore Taiwan. Visitors can enjoy famous night markets, mountain landscapes, hot springs, and Taiwan’s renowned hospitality before and after the race. Convenient transportation, a safe city environment, and incredible local food make Taipei an especially welcoming destination for runners and their families.

Taipei Marathon is a celebration of movement, community, and personal growth. Whether you are chasing a new personal best or simply looking for an unforgettable running experience in Asia, every step you take in Taipei can lead to something bigger.
