Tokyo Marathon
Sun 7 March 2027
Organized by the Tokyo Marathon Foundation, the inaugural Tokyo Marathon was held on 18 February 2007. Guided by its central theme, “The Day We Unite.” the event has brought together runners, volunteers, and spectators for 19 editions.
In 2011 the foundation launched its official charity program, “Run with Heart,” enabling participants and donors to contribute meaningfully to diverse charitable causes.
Marking its 10th anniversary in 2016, the official race logo was renewed to portray the shared energy of runners, volunteers and cheering crowds along the course—symbolizing the unifying spirit of the marathon. The following year, in 2017, the event introduced a new course finishing directly in front of Tokyo Station. Since this course change the Tokyo Marathon has produced numerous record-breaking times in both the men’s and women’s divisions.
In 2027 we look forward to celebrating our 20th anniversary. For this milestone, we have shone a light on individual dots in our Key Visual art. From single points of light to beams. From beams to fields of light. From these fields of light new points are born to become their own beams and form their own fields of light. Through running, people’s spirits and feelings unite the marathon and unite Tokyo, spreading out into the world. We’ve gone back to the basics and designed a new starting point for the 20th anniversary of the Tokyo Marathon.
Opportunities are still available to join the celebration through related running events. The Friendship Run 2027 – a fun run of approximately 5km – welcomes runners from overseas to foster international interaction and strengthen global unity. The Family Run 2027—a 1km fun run open to elementary school students running alongside a parent or guardian—offers a wonderful chance for families to spend meaningful time together. Both events provide the perfect environment to experience the true joy of running while soaking up the Tokyo Marathon atmosphere.
Global volunteer positions remain open for those who wish to support runners along the course.
