The Lumbini Peace Marathon offers runners from around the world a unique opportunity to experience a marathon unlike any other; a journey that combines sport, spirituality, culture and pilgrimage.

It is a spiritual marathon, inviting participants to run through some of the most sacred sites associated with the life of Shakyamuni Buddha.

Set in the birthplace of Buddha, Lumbini, this thematic marathon connects the spirit of running with a journey of peace and self-discovery. Participants will follow in the footsteps of Buddha, experiencing the historic and spiritual significance of Lumbini, Tilaurakot and Kapilvastu – places that are deeply connected to his life and teachings. Every kilometre becomes an opportunity for reflection, mindfulness and spiritual connection.

For runners constantly searching for new destinations and meaningful experiences, the Lumbini Peace Marathon offers something truly distinctive. It combines the excitement and endurance of long-distance running with the opportunity to discover Nepal’s rich Buddhist heritage. The route transforms the marathon into a pilgrimage on foot, allowing participants to experience the landscape, culture, history, and spirituality of one of the world’s most revered destinations.

For hundreds of millions of Buddhists around the world, Lumbini is the holiest pilgrimage destination associated with the Buddha. Its importance to Buddhism can be compared with the significance of the Vatican and Jerusalem for Christianity, Mecca and Medina for Islam, and other sacred pilgrimage destinations for major faith traditions. Lumbini therefore holds a special place in the spiritual heritage of humanity.

The Lumbini Peace Marathon seeks to bring people together through running while promoting the universal values taught by Buddha – peace, compassion, harmony, mindfulness and non-violence. It is an invitation to runners, pilgrims, and peace seekers from every corner of the world to come to Lumbini, discover its sacred heritage, and share a common message of peace.

Participants are invited to run for Lumbini, run for the Buddhist Pancha Sheel and Run for World Peace. With every step, the marathon demonstrates how sport can transcend competition to unite people, cultures, and communities in the pursuit of peace.

The Lumbini Peace Marathon is a journey of the body, mind, and spirit through the birthplace of Buddha towards a world of greater harmony.
